Committees
Since its founding in 1873, the ILA has played a crucial role in the development of international law and continues to do so today. The ILA’s work is conducted primarily through international committees and working groups that study specific international law issues, ranging from international arbitration and dispute resolution to space law and artificial intelligence. Members of the Swedish ILA contribute to the organization’s important work in the following committees:
John Kadelburger
Member of the ILA Committee on Conflict of Laws Issues in International Arbitration
The Committee aims to foster a harmonious approach to conflict of laws â or private international law, as it is often called â at both the state and the arbitral level. This harmonisation will contribute to the development of international law, as the methodology, principles and rules sought to be developed will promote uniform decision-making in international arbitration, avoid conflicts between arbitral tribunals and state courts, and enhance legal certainty for parties. It will also facilitate the task of arbitrators and judges, and increase the efficiency of arbitration.
David Silverlid
Member of the ILA Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Technology Law
The Committee aims to move beyond the traditional responsive approach of addressing specific consequences of AI (e.g., algorithmic bias or privacy violations) to examine the broader ways in which AI systems produce knowledge, make decisions, and influence governance. This approach recognises that AI technologies often function as epistemic agents, structuring and filtering information in ways that shape societal understandings and norms.
Marie Jacobsson
Member of the ILA Committee on Submarine Cables and Pipelines under International Law
The Committee studies the legal framework governing undersea infrastructure. It addresses gaps in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), focusing on cable/pipeline protection, environmental security, and emerging threats.
Dirk Roland Haupt
Member of the ILA Committee on Legal Aspects of Space Debris Remediation
The Committee aims to gather all relevant aspects of ADR and analysing the legal aspects of this growing and important sector. International space law is composed of five United Nations space treaties that lay the foundations for space exploration and use by humans, but the language of the treaties is general and widely formulated. And so far, no instrument addresses the legal aspects of space debris remediation.
Thomas Adlercreutz
Member of the ILA Committee on Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Armed Conflict
The Committee conducts a gap analysis of the international legal regime addressing the safeguarding of cultural heritage from the effects of armed conflicts. It identifies good practices stemming from past efforts to redress the harm caused to cultural heritage. And it develops policy-oriented recommendations for ensuring that cultural heritage is addressed in a comprehensive and adequate manner at all stages of an armed conflict in order to harness its potential as a vehicle for lasting peace.
