Annual Meeting – The Perestroika Era and International Law
Welcome to the annual meeting of the Swedish branch of the International Law Association and a discussion on the recently published book The Perestroika Era and International Law (Edward Elgar Publishing). The speaker is the book’s author Kaj Hobér. The Perestroika era (1985-1991) is considered one of the most eventful periods in modern history. The discussion will focus on how the “New Thinking” influenced the Soviet view of international law and contributed to a reorientation of Soviet foreign policy – especially in relation to changes in the view of the sources of international law, peaceful coexistence, the use of force, human rights and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the sample between Soviet and post-Soviet international law and foreign policy, both then and now, will be examined.
Speaker: Kaj Hobér, lawyer, arbitrator and representative for both states and commercial parties as well as Professor Emeritus of International Investment and Trade Law at Uppsala University and Fellow at the university’s Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies. Kaj Hobér is also a board member of the Swedish branch of the International Law Association.
